 TO MAKE REAL TIME PRODUCTION IN THE SUPERBIKE CIRCUIT

Mark One is the first 3D printer inside the pit box of GRT Yamaha Official Team WorldSSP.

Mark One designs and produces professional 3D printers in Italy. The high technical and technological performances of our products allowed us to forge a collaboration that will drastically change the use of 3D printing in the Superbike SSP championship. The partnership between Mark One and the GRT Yamaha Official Team, current defending champion of the SSP Superbike championship, aims to bring greater efficiency in the development and production of mechanical components to be implemented directly on the racing bike.

Being able to bring a Mark One 3D printer inside the Superbike pit box required a lot of study and a continuous relationship with the technical staff of GRT Yamaha. Mark One had to analyze in detail the needs of GRT Yamaha and customize the 3D printer according to their specific needs.

We interviewed the GRT Yamaha Team to find out what the 3D printer’s tasks will be inside the pit box.

WHY DID THE GRT YAMAHA TEAM CHOOSE TO USE A MARK ONE 3D PRINTER INSIDE THE BOX?

When speed and performance must reach the highest levels, the continuous development is a constant condition of work. The use of rapid prototyping technologies is not new in the Superbike environment but they were always used by external companies , outside the pit box and the races.

Thanks to Mark One, the GRT Yamaha Team will have a fully customizable 3D printer inside the pit box, helping the technicians to study, develop and test the solutions that make it possible to better adapt the bike to the rider’s needs.

HOW CAN THE MARK ONE 3D PRINTER BE USED INSIDE THE PIT BOX?

The Mark One 3D printer will create new less available spacers, caps, supports, brackets and other components that can be produced inside the pit box, compatibly with manufacturing times and needs. Added to this is the possibility of producing complex geometries with technical materials, as in the case of optimized components to improve tire change processes.

The Mark One 3D printer will be useful to create all the custom components that we need to produce in real time and it will solve some components’ supply problems, which limited some stages of development because of technical incompatibilities and developing times and costs.

Now we can not only produce the components in real time, but we can also do it by completely customizing both geometries and materials, which we would not be able to realize with different technologies.
In particular, the Mark One 3D printer will produce brackets, supports, closing caps, push-button panels, engine intake throttles, tire assembly and disassembly systems, objects with complex geometries and many others. This will allow us to not only print the components in real time, but also customize them at will with geometries that with different technologies we will not be able to realize.

WHAT IS THE IMPACT THAT 3D PRINTERS WILL HAVE IN THE FUTURE?

The close collaboration between us and Mark One has undoubtedly speeded up some processes inside the pit box and has allowed us to drastically reduce costs and time for the development of new components. I believe that in the future we can also achieve more and more structural components, that we are already starting to study and test, which will revolutionize the world of Motorsport.
